Event description

Contemporary Dunedin-based musicians Reid+Wolken highlight the Golden Age of Jazz in a second ‘boutique tribute’ concert after their previous two sell out Joni Mitchell performances. For one show only, this upcoming concert focuses on the duo repertoire of esteemed and notable jazz legends of the twentieth century: Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass. Songs are selected from studio and live albums: Take Love Easy (1973), Sophisticated Lady (1975), Fitzgerald and Pass… Again (1976), Speak Love (1983) and Easy Living (1986).

Vocalist Karin Reid and guitarist Alex Wolken turn their musical attention to pay homage to two of the “greats” who have influenced their own respective musical journeys, heightening an appreciation of the swing and ballad tradition, especially the art form of the stripped back duo format where every musical nuance comes under the spotlight. Reid and Wolken are considered Dunedin’s top jazz singer and jazz guitarist, bringing robust ‘chops’ and experience to the project, which provides audiences the chance to hear the pure interplay of voice and guitar in a musically sophisticated jazz context.

The one-off Ella and Joe show is an early evening gathering in the acoustically resonant setting of Trident House in Dunedin's Vogel Street area which has become a favoured space to present a variety of Reid+Wolken projects.

The duo are usually known as purveyors of a unique sound they dub 'indie jazz-noir' having developed a mix of reimagined jazz standards, modern jazz vocalese and avant-tinged originals, coaxing rich and evocative harmonies and subtle grooves from their minimal set up.

For this special performance Reid+Wolken bring their musical interpretation to classic songs such as "Autumn in New York", "Cry Me A River" and "Lush Life" for an unforgettable evening of stylish and intimate jazz.
