Reimaging the Housing Crisis Symposium
Description
There is a housing crisis globally, especially in large metropolitan areas.
Addressing this housing crisis is urgent. While specific focus and tools differ, there is a convening narrative that frames the housing problem primarily as a supply problem. This narrow statement undermines the multifaceted, multi-level, multi-temporal, and multi-sectoral factors that compound the prolonged housing crisis. These include, for example:
· The systematic nature of the housing system,
· the rhymes and sub-regional market dynamics,
· the politically and racially loaded decision-making,
· the often-stereotyped demand and design constraints, and
· the growing hyper-local embeddedness of the housing sector, intertwined with global financial flows and geopolitical struggles.
This Symposium, co-organised by the Bartlett UCL and Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning, Melbourne University, aims to capture, unpack, and upfront, these emerging, and sometimes ‘untraditional’ causes in order to propose new pathways of actions.
