What do Standard Measures of Rental Affordability Reveal?
Description
The UCLA Lewis Center for Regional Policy Studies is hosting a research talk by Professor Nicholas Marantz of the UC Irvine Department of Urban Planning & Public Policy titled "What do Standard Measures of Rental Affordability Reveal?" Lunch will be provided.
About the Research:
Affordability is the most salient housing policy issue in the U.S., but it’s also conceptually elusive. The most cited metrics — such as rent burden and rent-to-income ratio — can obscure important differences across people and places.
This lecture examines how well conventional measures capture the realities of rental affordability. Drawing on data from 1960 to 2024, the research breaks down the factors shaping affordability — including renter population, household composition, rents, incomes, and housing supply elasticity — to reveal how and why rental affordability varies across U.S. urban areas.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Nicholas Marantz (PhD, MIT; JD, Harvard) conducts research addressing local governance and the regulation of the built environment, particularly as they relate to mobility and housing affordability. He also analyzes the impact of changes in environmental laws and institutions of local governance on planning practice and metropolitan development patterns, as well as the ways that non-lawyers (particularly urban planners) understand and use legal materials.
