Fairer, Safer Renting – what’s the current state of play in Victoria and what's next?
Event description
In March 2021, Victoria led the nation in changing the state’s Residential Tenancies Act to make renting fairer and safer. However, elements of this rights regime are still confusing and difficult to navigate for some renters and the workers who support them. Increasing demand for rental housing and a global cost-of-living crisis has also tested the limits of current renter protections, requiring additional measures.
To mark the anniversary of the 2021 RTA reforms, VCOSS is hosting a free online forum featuring:
- Kat Theophanous, newly appointed Parliamentary Secretary for Renters, who will join in conversation with Juanita Pope, VCOSS CEO about Victoria’s current rental fairness.
- Followed by a presentation and audience Q&A with Tenants Victoria’s Senior Lawyer, Ben Cording. Ben is back by popular demand to explain Victoria's rental rules to community sector workers, and answer audience questions.
This free online forum is for anyone in the community sector who supports people navigating rental issues, as well as those working on renting policy and advocacy.
Auslan
Due to high demand, Victoria is experience a shortage of Auslan interpreters. VCOSS strives to ensure our events are inclusive to everyone and will do our best to secure Auslan interpreters. To help us do this, if you require Auslan for this event, please RSVP as soon as possible so that we can work with Expression Australia to secure interpreters.
VCOSS is the peak representative body for Victoria’s social and community sector, and the state’s leading social advocacy organisation. We work towards creating a Victoria that is fair, just and inclusive. A society where nobody is trapped by poverty, and everybody is supported to live a life of wellbeing.
