Event description

Victoria’s homes weren’t built for a changing climate. Increasing temperatures and more frequent climate-driven disasters, coupled with barriers to ensuring rental homes are compliant with minimum standards, mean renters are having increasing difficulty securing access to safe, affordable housing that protects them from climate hazards.

In partnership with Financial Counselling Victoria and Tenants Victoria, VCOSS is running a Renters' Rights Rundown event specifically looking at the impacts of climate change on renters.

This Renters' Rights Rundown session will take place on the 29th of October at 11:15am- 12:15pm and will feature:

  • Julianne Tice, Climate Policy Advisor, VCOSS

  • Kellie Davis, Disaster Recovery Lead, Financial Counselling Victoria

  • Tim Koerner, Climate and Disaster Justice Lead, Tenants Victoria

This session is free and open to all, but designed for community sector workers who provide information, advice, and assistance to renters in Victoria.

The session will take a deep dive into the unique challenges renters face in relation to climate change. The session will cover:

  • The impacts of climate change on renters.

  • The necessary community sector supports required to ensure renters experiencing climate-related tenancy issues can exercise their rental rights.

  • Key rights of renters under the Residential Tenancies Act and the unique challenges or experiences renters impacted by climate change may encounter in asserting these rights.

We will also dedicate time for a Q&A portion at the end to ensure participants have time to ask the experts any questions they may have.

This event is delivered through VCOSS' Delivering Rental Fairness project, which is funded through the Victorian Property Fund established and administered by the Victorian Government. VCOSS particularly acknowledges Consumer Affairs Victoria's support for this work.

VCOSS is the peak representative body for Victoria’s social and community sector, and the state’s leading social advocacy organisation.

We work towards creating a Victoria that is fairjust and inclusive. A society where nobody is trapped by poverty, and everybody is supported to live a life of wellbeing.
