Heart transplantation is currently the only viable option for patients with advanced heart failure. In Australia, our ageing population means there will never be enough donor organs to meet this growing pressure.
Dr Zoe Clayton is a project coordinator in the Cardiac Regeneration group at the Westmead Institute for Medical Research (WIMR) where she is currently coordinating a Phase 1 clinical trial of pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes for heart failure. The trial is led by Associate Professor James Chong and funded by the Medical Research Future Fund. Clayton will explore the feasibility of stem cell derived transplantation in pre-clinical models and how WIMR is working to optimise the efficacy and safety of this novel therapy.
