Event description

Adelaide Samba Encontro is proud to present Repique Club, with Rob Arcari

This workshop will focus on the Repique (or Repinique), as it's played in Rio's Samba Schools. Utilising one wooden stick, and one hand, this percussion instrument plays a vital role in every Escola de Samba.
The workshop will be looking at fundamental aspects of the instrument such as technique for improved quality of sound, speed and stamina, as well as the role of the instrument when it comes to calling the bateria.

We will look at subidas (calls), and the role the repique plays within bossas (breaks). There will be focus on the history of the instrument, as well as how it is being used within Rio's samba schools today. Likely to be a small and intimate group, this is an opportunity to level up both your playing and your understanding of the instrument.

EXPERIENCE:

Players should be intermediate to advanced. You should be comfortable playing the repique with one stick and one hand to some degree.

WHAT TO BRING:

BYO Repique, stick, strap. (If you don't own your own, you're encouraged to borrow one from one of the bands performing at the encontro. If you don't know anyone to ask, reach out early and Rob may be able to lend you an instrument)

ABOUT YOUR TEACHER:

Mestre Rob has been spearheading the Melbourne Samba scene for the last 10 years. He’s mestre de bateria of Bloco 3K (Melbourne) and Unidos da Cacatua (Aus/NZ). A passionate percussionist for more than 25 years, he's had the pleasure of playing and studying with groups across the UK, Europe, Australia & Brazil.

Over the past 8 years he’s been making an annual pilgrimage to Rio where he parades playing with numerous Escolas de Samba. He plays Repique with Imperatriz Leopoldinense and Repique de Bossa with Acadêmicos da Rocinha. He’s also paraded with Paraiso da Tuiuti, Império da Tijuca & Estacio de Sá, amongst other schools.

Rob is passionate about bringing authentic Afro-Brazilian percussion to Australia, and makes it his mission to get as close to the source as possible. Having just returned from yet another successful carnaval season in Rio, his experience gives him a unique perspective on modern samba practice.
