For the first time in our 32-year history, Res Artis will host our annual conference in Latin America! Titled Other Springs: Blooms from the Global South, the 2025 event will be hosted by long-standing Res Artis Member Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado (FAAP) and held in São Paulo, Brazil. The conference is sponsored by the Department of Culture, Economy, and Creative Industries, São Paulo State Government, and is supported by Associação Pinacoteca Arte e Cultura (APAC) and SP Negócios.

Motivated by the title of the book Primavera para as Rosas Negras: Lélia Gonzalez em Primeira Pessoa (2018), the conference will offer unique perspectives from the Global South guided by the concept of ‘amefricanity’. The program will emphasise the significance of Indigenous and African presence in shaping the cultural and social landscape of Brazil and wider Latin America today, including how the structure and practices of art residencies in the region reflect this rich heritage.

Drawing on the ethos of FAAP as an educational and artistic institution we will also reflect on the theme of education in the arts residencies field. Using case studies from the region and abroad, the event will examine how artists can combine research, access to collections and exchange; the contributions of public institutions in hosting arts residencies; and the crucial educational role that arts residencies play in an artist’s career trajectory.

The event will take place in-person in São Paulo, with some events streamed online. A broad range of formats will offer diversity to participants, including panel discussions, performances, workshops, case studies, presentations, art tours and more. The conference will be conducted in English, Portuguese and Spanish.

Pela primeira vez em seus 32 anos de história, a Res Artis realizará sua conferência anual na América Latina! Com o título Outras Primaveras: Florações do Sul Global (Other springs: A kaleidoscope of blooms from the Global South), o evento de 2025 será sediado pelo tradicional membro da Res Artis, a Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado (FAAP), e acontecerá em São Paulo, Brasil de 18 a 23 de setembro. A conferência marcará o 20º aniversário da Residência Artística FAAP – São Paulo e irá coincidir com a 36ª Bienal de São Paulo e com a Temporada França-Brasil, que celebra os 200 anos de relações diplomáticas entre os dois países.

Motivada pelo título do livro Primavera para as Rosas Negras: Lélia Gonzalez em Primeira Pessoa (2018), a conferência irá oferecer perspectivas únicas do Sul Global, guiadas pelo conceito de “Amefricanidade”. O programa irá enfatizar a importância da presença indígena e africana no cenário cultural e social do Brasil e de toda a América Latina hoje, incluindo como a estrutura e a prática das residências artísticas na região refletem essa rica herança.

Com base na filosofia da FAAP, como uma instituição artística e educacional, também será abordado o tema da educação no campo das residências artísticas. Utilizando estudos de caso da região e do exterior, o evento irá examinar como artistas podem combinar pesquisa, acesso a coleções e intercâmbio; o papel da contribuição de instituições públicas na organização de residências artísticas, e o papel crucial que as residências artísticas desempenham na trajetória de um artista.

O evento será realizado presencialmente em São Paulo, com alguns eventos transmitidos on-line. Uma ampla gama de formatos oferecerá diversidade aos participantes, incluindo painéis de discussão, performances, workshops, estudos de caso, apresentações, passeios artísticos e muito mais. A conferência será realizada em inglês, português e espanhol.
