About Professor Lloyd Cox

In 1958 Lloyd Cox was appointed as the foundation Professor of the University of Adelaide’s Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&G) Department, established at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Adelaide.

Cox had previously worked in New Zealand and the UK and his vision was for the Department to be a world leader. His strongly held belief that science and medicine should collaborate closely established the foundations for future success and this culture of collaboration has successfully continued under successive leaders. Cox wanted O&G to be a science-based department and was the first person to bring infertility as a medical issue to the attention of mainstream medicine.

He encouraged people to look at new ideas and develop new techniques. During his time as head of O&G, Cox appointed Ron Cox as a biochemist – this was the first department of its kind to appoint a scientist. Also, the first frozen semen bank in Australia, and the first sperm donor program were established. Prof Cox retired in 1984 and was replaced by Prof Jeffrey Robinson, as head of Department while Colin Matthews was appointed as Professor of Reproductive Medicine, with the Robinson Research Institute being named after Professor Jeffrey Robinson.
