Event description

The REthink Nillumbik program is funded by Nillumbik Shire Council and supported by Edendale Community Environment Farm and NECAH (Nillumbik Environment and Climate Action Hub). The project will be delivered by Going Green Solutions and supports Council's climate action goal of net-zero community emissions by 2035.

REthink your kitchen

Ever wonder where that chipped mug ends up, or how much food gets tossed each week? The traditional "take-make-use-waste" model in our kitchens uses a huge amount of resources and creates significant waste to landfill. The good news? By embracing the circular economy, we can transform our kitchens into spaces that are a whole lot friendlier to the planet and our hip pocket!

In this session, we’ll look at common kitchen purchases and practices, and how we can apply circular economy principles to making our kitchens more sustainable. The benefits to you?

  • Reduced environmental impact: Less waste means less pressure on landfills and natural resources
  • Save money: Durable products, reduced food waste, and fewer single-use items translate to financial savings
  • Empowerment: Be part of the solution by making conscious choices that benefit the planet.

We’ll use a range of interesting and out of the box techniques including plenty of brainstorming, discussion, and some hands-on activities to make your very own kitchen products from scratch. We'll also look at ways to streamline your kitchen routines and systems to make achieving your sustainability goals easier.

This lesson provides a springboard for your circular-kitchen journey. Let's brainstorm some additional ideas and share tips to help each other create a more sustainable and resourceful space.

Topics include:

  • Intro to REthink actions of refuse, reduce, repair, reuse, repurpose, replace, recycle
  • food and cooking
  • appliances and equipment
  • purchase choices
  • packaging and waste
  • systems, habits and routines

Who is it for?

The session is suited to anyone interested in reducing the amount of money, packaging, and resources they consume in the home. It’s also for those wanting to learn hands-on skills for making their own everyday food items and cleaning products.
