Event description

Rethinking AAC and AAC Practice Workshop by David Niemeijer, Ph.D. - founder and CEO of AssistiveWare and hosted by Novita.

This workshop is intended for Novita staff and private SLPs and OTs working with AAC.

The session will start with a data-informed review of what we can learn from current AAC use in Australia and beyond. We will identify critical challenges and opportunities. Next we will look at the potential of AAC beyond a speech prosthetic. Which inherent properties of a well-designed AAC system can support language development and education? We will explore the importance of dual-coding and embodied cognition and how AAC can support teachers and students in the classroom. Finally, we will take a look at how Proloquo was designed to overcome many of the limitations of existing AAC systems while facilitate teaching and learning.
