Retirement Villages Models of Care Workshop: Finding Local Solutions to the Aged Care Bed Shortage

CI Group is excited to be bringing together retirement living and aged care providers across the Illawarra and Shoalhaven for a focused workshop on one of the most pressing challenges facing our region's aged care sector.

With the region sitting over 1,000 beds short and unable to build its way out of the problem, this workshop will explore a different question: what can we do with what we already have?

This workshop is open to Retirement Living Providers, Aged Care Sector, and Health Sector professionals across the Illawarra and Shoalhaven region.

Workshop Program

The workshop will open with a presentation by Kathy Eagar and Paul Sadler on their research and report findings, providing attendees with the evidence base ahead of group discussion. Then, Mark Sewell will facilitate a structured discussion aimed at exploring opportunities, identifying preferred models of care, and working out who is interested in taking the next step.

This workshop will aim to:

Bring together providers to discuss the current shortfall, with the region sitting over 1,000 beds short and unable to build its way out of the problem
Explore the potential for repurposing existing stock as an alternative model of care
Discuss alternative models of care and work toward identifying a preferred model
Identify providers interested in progressing to a next step

*About the Presenters and Facilitator

PROFESSOR KATHY EAGAR AM

Professor Kathy Eagar AM is an Honorary Professor at the University of New South Wales Australia and an Adjunct Professor at the Queensland University of Technology Australia. She is on the Board of NSW Meals on Wheels and on the Board of the NSW Older Women’s Network (OWN). She is a Member of the Order of Australia for her contribution to the community through her research and development work.

Professor Eagar has undertaken extensive research and advocacy work in the aged care system over the last two decades. She designed the national funding model for residential aged care and worked as an adviser to the Aged Care Royal Commission. She is a strong advocate for transparent and equitable funding for community aged care with a special focus on not-for-profit services. Together with Paul Sadler, she is a co-convenor of the newly established CHSP Alliance.

PAUL SADLER

Paul Sadler is an experienced leader and influencer who brings an extensive range of experience from four decades in the aged care sector. Paul has been a national and state CEO of aged care industry associations, CEO of a major aged care provider, and influencer of ageing policy, disability and community care programs for both national and state governments.

Kathy and Paul are working for the Community Industry Group on the Illawarra Shoalhaven health and aged care interface project. This project is taking a multipronged approach to addressing the acute shortage of residential aged care in the region and the resultant impact on Illawarra residents, families and hospitals.

MARK SEWELL

Mark Sewell is a seasoned leader in the aged care and community services sector. He is a Director of Ageing Australia, Wesley Mission, and Grand Pacific Health, bringing extensive governance and strategic expertise to these roles. Mark previously served as CEO of Warrigal and has held leadership positions as Regional Councillor at Business Illawarra and Chair of the Lighthouse and Cedars boards. His wealth of experience supports his commitment to driving positive outcomes in aged care and community services.
