RetroSuburbia Book Club 2026

The Chinese phrase “May you live in interesting times” captures the essence of contemporary environmental issues such as climate chaos, species extinction, and environmental degradation. There is an urgent need to address and repair the damage done whilst simultaneously providing for human needs, and to create a sustainable future for generations to come. Potential solutions an be found within the Natural, Social, and Artificial realms.

The book “RetroSuburbia,” authored by David Holmgren, serves as a guide for transforming households and communities towards greater resilience, emphasizing the effective use of current infrastructure to foster planetary regeneration. In the book club, we will delve into strategies included in the book, and discuss options and actionable steps in response to these pressing challenges, with an emphasis on sharing experiences to encourage collective learning.

The book club is free and inclusive, requiring no prior knowledge. Participants will need a copy of “RetroSuburbia,” which can be purchased online or through the facilitator, or borrowed. Participants will receive a workbook with resources, supplied by the facilitator, for which a contribution towards expenses is requested.

The Book Club will be held at the Shepparton Library on Saturday mornings, spanning 10 two-hour sessions beginning on May 30 and concluding on October 3. The sessions will run from 10:30am to 12:30pm, with a short break for morning tea with each of us providing some yummies on rotation.
