Event description

Join NAWIC Wellington members... and representatives from TEAM Architects Wellington, Paul Cummack and LT McGuinness Ltd

ABOUT THE PROJECT:

Sacred Heart Cathedral, located on Hill Street in Thorndon was closed in July 2018 following an assessment that determined it was a seismic risk building. This kicked off a 6 year project led by TEAM Architects Wellington working with LT McGuinness to not only strengthen the building but to undertake restoration of the Category 1 Heritage Building. With Dunning Thornton, Paul Cummack Conservation, Monastra QS, the team have worked hard over the last 4 years to return the Cathedral to a position where it could be reopened.  On the 7th June this year the Catholic community of Wellington celebrated a return to a building that holds many memories and significance.

This tour is a follow up to the tour in 2023 that highlighted the progress of work on site.  While the Cathedral has opened this is a soft opening with some ongoing work in the adjacent non-heritage spaces.  The tour will give an insight into the work that has been done and the work that is ongoing with a chance for you to see the results of the challenges and subsequent decisions that were made. Your tour guide will be Jane Kelly, TEAM Director & Project Architect.  She will outline the challenges that were met and the subsequent approach to repairs and solutions.  There are also some surprising stories and findings along the way
