Event description

Has the restoration of the River Torrens created an environment fit for the reintroduction of the platypus?

The last Mt Lofty ranges platypus disappeared from the Karrawirra Pari (River Torrens) in the 1880s.

This extinction was brought about by habitat destruction, water pollution, flow changes and the development of the city.

Since the 1960s a huge amount of work has been done to restore the River Torrens to a state which will cope with the needs and conditions of an urban environment, and also be habitat for wildlife.

The past, present, and future of the South Australian platypus is emblematic of the history and future of the River Torrens.

If it is possible, what will the return of one of Australia’s most iconic animals mean for the residents of South Australia, and to those in other locations exploring recovery, translocations and rewilding of “lost” species?

Professor Chris Daniels, chair of Green Adelaide, will probe the question: has all this work now created a river fit for the reintroduction of platypus?
