Event description

The workshop is about looking at world not as it is but what you can make it into. It is about listening to your materials tell you what to make them into. It is to see that things can be used "off label" to ascend beyond their original purpose. It is about finding out that you can reuse things in ways you did not imagine before. It is about making things and having fun.

In this workshop, you will be guided by Master Builder and long-time ACR volunteer, Clyde, to reimagine the weirdest and wackiest items that are found around our center- AKA the items that have lived their first life and are looking for a new purpose. This workshop is a great way to stretch your imagination, become a true ‘reuse artist’ and make something completely unique!

This workshop is appropriate for ages 11+ only (yes, adults, too!). Minors do not have to be accompanied by a parent or guardian during the workshop. Adults must come inside to drop their child off with the workshop instructor. Drop off begins 10 minutes before the scheduled start time, and everyone must be picked up at the scheduled end of the workshop.

About the Instructor

Clyde Hoover has built from his imagination since childhood when he put an airplane model together kit "wrong" because that's the way he thought it should look. This began him on a convoluted path to over 40 years as a systems administrator and programmer, all along the way creating new things based upon a notion or to meet a need. One day he disassembled a defunct computer disk drive and found treasures just begging to be made into things with wheels and wings and funny little arms.

His catalog includes creations small enough to fit in the palm of your hand to hulking four foot high robots with glowing eyes and a bad attitude. He uses a wide variety of materials - electronic parts, plumbing parts, bicycle parts, television parts, computer parts, appliance parts, and pretty much anything which tells him to make them into something.
