Taking the Stage: How Performance-Making Builds Confidence and Agency in Young Women

For many teenagers, the journey to self-confidence is a rocky one. Between the pressures of school, social media, and a rapidly changing world, finding a voice—and learning to trust it—can be daunting. That’s where performance-making comes in. More than just acting, singing, or dancing, it’s the art of shaping stories, devising original works, and stepping into the spotlight with conviction. And for young women aged 13 to 17, this creative process is proving to be a powerful pathway to agency and empowerment.

Why Performance-Making Matters

Personal agency—the belief that your choices matter and can shape outcomes—is not something that appears overnight. It’s built through opportunities to experiment, to fail safely, and to succeed on your own terms. Performance-making provides exactly that.

In workshops and rehearsals, young people aren’t just following scripts—they’re creating them. They’re encouraged to ask questions, take risks, and put forward ideas that shape the final performance. That process tells them, in no uncertain terms: your voice counts. It’s a message that resonates far beyond the stage.

Building Skills That Last

The benefits of performance-making extend well past opening night. Participants develop confidence in public speaking, collaboration skills, and the resilience to keep going when things don’t work out the first time. They learn that a mistake isn’t a failure, but part of the creative journey. And in a world where young women are often told to shrink back or doubt themselves, standing tall on a stage becomes an act of self-assertion.

Educators and youth mentors note that the impact is long-term: young women who take part in performance-making are more likely to take initiative in other parts of their lives—whether that’s in leadership roles, academic settings, or community projects.

A Program Designed for Young Women

This is the driving philosophy behind the RISE Performance-Making for Young Women program. Open to participants aged 13 to 17, the program creates a safe, inclusive space where young women can explore their creativity, share their stories, and grow their confidence.

Through guided workshops, mentorship, and collaborative projects, participants will not only build a performance from the ground up but also develop the tools to carry their newfound agency into everyday life. For many, it will be the first time their stories are placed at the centre of the stage—a powerful reminder that their experiences and perspectives matter. Because in performance-making, as in life, the most important lesson is simple: you have the power to tell your own story.
