Risingholme Orchestra presents Matinée Musicale
Description
Risingholme Orchestra invites you to our concert titled Matinée Musicale: a selection of contrasting works appropriate to an afternoon's entertainment. The programme ranges over a 250-year period from a JS Bach keyboard concerto dating from the late 1730s to two movements from our own Music Director's Concerto for Violin and Piano which was premiered by the CSO in 1995.
Other works include a suitably lively Holst Suite for Military Band showcasing the talents of our brass players, and complementing the orchestration of the Bach Concerto which gives our string section the limelight.
Two works feature composers who drew their inspiration from earlier composers. Alexander Glazunov's Chopiniana, as the name suggests, is an orchestral reworking of five of Chopin's piano pieces, from which we perform the two outer movements: "Polonaise" and "Tarantelle".
Similarly, Benjamin Britten was drawn to the music of Rossini, and composed an arrangement of a five-
movement suite that retained Rossini's original title of Soirées musicales (Musical evenings).
Our programme is rounded out by a version of George Gershwin's evergreen An American in Paris Suite comprising four short, interlinked movements in alternating quick and slow tempi.
