    YEL - River Murray Expedition

    Join us for a day of history, learning and adventure at Paringa!
    Tour Lock 5 to discover how water is managed and what it’s like to be a Lock Master. Explore the paddle boat Avalon and hear from local expert Captain Jackson Wickham about its history, and the significance of paddleboats for our region. To top it off, join in the fun of the mini-carpathon and compete for great prizes as we work together to rid the river of this feral pest.

    Lock 5, Paringa and Paringa sandbar.
    10am - 2pm

    Anticipated program:
    9:45 am Arrive at Lock 5, Lock 5 Road Paringa SA.
    Morning tea/recess ready to start at 10 am sharp (or eat recess on the way).
    10:00 am Welcome, overview of the day. Split into groups.
    10:10 am - 10:40 am Activity 1
    10:45 am - 11:25 am - Activity 2
    11:30 am - 12:10 pm - Activity 3
    12:10 pm LUNCH - on lawns at Lock 5, then move to Paringa sandbar.
    12:30pm - 1:40pm carpathon competition. Attendees will have the opportunity to try fishing from the bank to catch carp. Assistance and some fishing gear will be provided.
    1:45pm Presentations and prizes. YEL wrap up for 2024.
    2:00 pm YEL Close.

    More information:

    What to wear: All attendees to wear enclosed shoes, wide brimmed hats and weather-appropriate clothes for the day.
    What to bring: refillable water bottles, morning tea and packed lunch, fishing rod or hand reel and tackle if you wish - some gear will be provided on the day. Teachers/adults please BYO coffee on the way to this event as we will not be providing tea & coffee station.
    We will provide: Sunscreen, water to refill bottles, ice and cold drinks if it’s hot, snacks for teachers/adults, some fishing tackle (hand reels, hooks, sinkers) and bait.
    Please remember: ensure students eat recess/morning tea on the way to YEL location OR arrive early so event can start on time.
    Weather considerations: In the event of thunderstorms, heavy/prolonged rainfall or catastrophic weather forecast for the day, this event will be cancelled.
    Registered schools will be provided with final map and information on meeting location and other requirements for the day.
    Risk assessment: general risk assessment information will be provided to registered schools. Supervision near water will be required for this event, so please consider ratios when attending. There will be 2 MR Landscape Board staff present and assisting with supervision on the day. There will be no swimming or students entering the water on the day. Fishing will take place from the bank of the Paringa sandbar and markers in place to guide/advise students of boundaries.
    Anything else: any native fish caught on the day will be released immediately. Carp and other non-native fish will be euthanised humanely, removed from the area and disposed ofat the end of the day.

    Cost: Free. This project is supported by the Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board through funding from the landscape levies.
