Guest Speaker – Eric Messer

"Forks in the Road"

Growing up in a Scottish fishing village it seemed only right to love the boats, the ocean and everything connected with the sea. Eric will talk about how his course changed from thoughts of a fishing career to ending up in the Merchant Navy, the Salvage Industry, etc., and the events that led to those course changes. He was “at sea” in vessels ranging from supertankers to salvage tugs for over 54 years and at the end of his career he was the Master of Victoria’s Emergency Towing Vessel, ready at one hour’s notice to rescue a ship in trouble in Victorian waters.

His interest in marine creatures was started by finding weird, dead fish and marine life in the nets of fishing boats in the local harbour. With a key focus on the marine life, Eric and his wife, Marianne, have dived all over the world on some of the world’s most famous wrecks. He has owned a number of boats including a Dragon which he bought from Rob Umhauer with whom he sailed from time to time.

So most days Eric and Marianne have been beside, in, or under the ocean. It has been an amazing gift and one for which they are very grateful.
