Event description

The World Lebanese Cultural Union of Sydney cordially invite you to our special evening “Rome Comes to Lebanon”.

Join us for a remarkable journey and culinary celebration of Lebanese history, focussing on the impact of the Roman influence in Lebanon for 700 years. Learn about the six Roman Emperors of Phoenician heritage and their influence granting inhabitants of Byblos, Sidon and Tyre Roman citizenship. Hear of the Palaces and Temples that were built, the most famous being the ruins of Baalbek. However there are also monuments and ruins of Roman temples throughout Lebanon. Amongst the revival in construction came the first Law School in the world in Beirut, which was a centre to study Roman law.

This entertaining and enthralling evening features Dr John Whitehouse, a leading planning and environmental lawyer who is also an expert in Roman history. Dr Whitehouse will embark on one of the most prosperous times in the history of Lebanon (then Phoenicia), when it was under Roman Rule for 700 years up to the Sixth Century. We will be taken on an historical voyage to a time when Lebanon was a flourishing and prominent intellectual and economic hub.

You will enjoy a fabulous four-course meal, showcasing the best of Lebanon and Italy, including Arabia Meze plates. There will be award winning Lebanese and Italian wines, arak and special whiskey releases. You will be enthralled as history is brought to life by Dr John Whitehouse and you will be entertained with music, Lebanese singing and the incredible Soprano Amelia Farrugia, as well as other surprises.

Significantly, $50 from each ticket purchased will be directly sent to assist the needy in Lebanon.
