Rōpū Waiata
Description
Nau mai, waiata mai!
Ever been to a hui and everyone stands up to sing the waiata tautoko and you feel like you’re the only person in the room that doesn’t know the kupu? Or ever want to stand up to sing your own waiata tautoko, but you only know half the words? This is the place for you!
We’re gonna be catching up, every fortnight, to practice those old favourites, to get to know the songs you’ve hummed along to, not to stand on a stage to perform, but just so we can feel more confident in our Māoritanga or with our reo.
We are generously being hosted at Purapura Whetū premises, there’ll be kapū tī and bikkies and koha is always welcomed, but not necessary.
If you know the Māori strum or if you can pick up a chord, whether it be on the gat, a ukulele or any other stringed instrument that can tautoko us, bring that along too.
We’ll practice around 10-12 songs each term and/or rotate new waiata in as needed.
