About Gabrielle Phillips
Gabrielle is a Wollongong local and associate research fellow at the Illawarra Health and Medical Research Insitute (IHMRI), University of Wollongong (UOW). She is interested in the neurodegenerative genetic illness Huntington's disease and examining how the disease alters the lipid chemistry of various brain regions. She hopes this research will assist in unravelling a treatable pathology, for which none currently exist. She received her bachelor's degree in Medical and Health Sciences from UOW in 2016 and started at IHMRI the following year as an honours student. Her honours project started her journey in researching Huntington's disease, during which she was supported by the Miller Bridge Water Family Scholarship for Dementia Research. She graduated at the top of her honours cohort with first-class honours and began her PhD in 2018, which she has recently submitted. Since 2019, her research in Huntington's disease has been supported by philanthropic funding, which enabled her current position at the university in April of this year. She currently sits on the Community Advisory Committee of Huntington's NSW/ACT, advocating for the best practice in supporting people living with Huntington's disease.
