Rottnest Society Volunteering Weekends
Description
The Rottnest Society is an incorporated not-for-profit 'friends' group with a focus on environmental and social aspects of the management of Rottnest Island. We offer 5 volunteer events each year during the winter months.
If you care for nature and want to make a meaningful contribution to our natural environment, come join us for an uplifting, community team-building experience! Spend a fun and rewarding Saturday planting seedlings and helping revegetate this precious island — a truly multi-generational way of giving back to the planet that supports us all. You can join for the day, or opt to stay for the weekend.
Day trip: Ferry travel is included for your volunteer work. We meet at 8.45am on the island, travel by bus to the work site. The Rottnest environmental team provide us with equipment, and guidance. We have 2 breaks and finish work around 3pm in order to pack up and make it back to the departing ferries at 4.30pm.
There is a small administration cost for non-members to join us for the day of volunteering, ($20). You are welcome to become a member and join us for the day at no cost.
Weekend option: We offer shared accommodation, in the Caroline Thomson Cabins. You arrive on Friday or Saturday, and stay Friday night and/or Saturday night, returning Sunday. The cost of the accommodation is the same for 1 or 2 nights.
Accommodation cost is $50 for members, $70 for non-members.
Please note Humanitix adds a small additional fee at check-out - this goes to charity.
BEFORE BOOKING: We highly encourage everyone who wishes to participate to read ALL faqs below regarding cancellations, weather & workload before booking.

FAQs
- What is the work? What does the work involve?
On planting days the Rottnest Island Environmental staff choose a location on the island, and demonstrate the work before we begin. They provide tools, plants, water refill (byo bottle), first aid kit and sunscreen. We usually work in teams of two or three people and plant a mixture of seedlings across a specified area. Our last weekend for the year is usually weeding and/or beach clean up, as it is too late in the season for planting.
- Can I cancel my booking? What if I become unwell before the event?
We kindly ask that only committed volunteers book a place, as spaces are limited and last-minute cancellations are difficult to fill.
If you need to cancel, please do so at least 30 days before the event by managing your booking directly through Humanitix. Cancellations made 30 days or more before the event are eligible for a refund.
What if I become unwell or something comes up within 30 days of the event?
We understand that life happens! However, tickets are non-refundable within 30 days of the event. If you are unable to attend, we warmly encourage you to donate your place back to the Rottnest Society. This allows your ticket fee to support another volunteer from the waitlist to attend in your place — meaning your contribution still makes a difference even if you can't be there.
To donate your place, please contact us directly.
Why such a firm policy?
Our working weekends rely on a committed team turning up. Every place matters — both for the work we do on the island and for the volunteers who miss out when others cancel late. We appreciate your understanding and your support of our environmental mission.
- What if it is rainy?
Be prepared to work in rainy and windy conditions, we are planting in winter to allow for the trees to have the best possible chance to survive. If it is raining we still need to work, so make sure you bring the appropriate wet weather clothing.
- Who can volunteer? Is there a minimum or maximum age for volunteers?
Yes, our minimum age is 15 years. The nature of the work and our insurance cover means that we cannot allow young children to join our working weekends.
No maximum age, but please be aware there is some level of fitness required for the work. We are working in rough terrain, sometimes requiring the team to walk up and down hillsides, climb through scrub and walk along uneven rocky tracks.
- How long do we work for?
We meet at 8.45am and are transported to the work site. We begin around 9.30am after the demonstration, and work until 3.30pm with a morning tea and lunch break. We only work on Saturday. If you are staying for the weekend, the rest of the time you are free to enjoy the island.
- Why is there a cost? Is the ferry cost included?
Yes, the ferry cost is included and provided by the island in return for your work. The ticket cost covers the administration for The Rottnest Society to organise the 5 events - we are volunteers ourselves, organising the events takes a lot of work. We thank you for contributing to the Society for our work. If you would like to become a member, the day trip is free for members.
