People Skills began in Philadelphia in the mid-2000s as an exercise to document untrained experiments in improvised song and sound collage using only found, free materials. In practice, the recordings usually took the form of simple songs, most often employing slow pop formulas to caricature listenable music. The inner logic however, is informed by deconstructive Situationist, post-structural, and Fluxus theory and pulls at the space between art and amateurism. From this vantage point the projects blending of budget collage and negligent songcraft is defined by its inconspicuous unease, more than genre.

People Skills burns dimly as a sonic effigy to the awkward, isolated reflections of the human experience. Their material has been published by Siltbreeze, Blackest Ever Black, I Dischi Del Barone, Alien Passengers, Digital Regress and Kashual Plastik among recent tour releases by Altered States and No Label NZ.

"People Skills sits in a very weird style trench. Parts are of a piece with current post-industrial mutts of vaguery like Matt Krefting, Scott Foust and Graham Lambkin, but there's also an urge toward songliness and graspable organization in line with Richard Youngs’s party moves. Mix those together with a murky sub-underground feel resembling South Island NZ pop played inside of an armored car, and you can begin to get a handle on it. - Thurston Moore and Byron Coley (Bull Tongue Review issue 2)

------------------------------

Numerous practices make up the electro-acoustic sound collages created by S*Glass. He combines tape music, electronic processing, voice, found sound, and chance operations. Every show uses a different batch of curated audio, mixed live, while the self-produced studio albums are more refined assemblages. The playing of non-musical objects is sometimes incorporated (dental floss, aluminum foil, wind-up toys, metal lunch box, cabbage). Self-shot video is screened during sets, which is
mostly textures made with multiple layers that slowly wobble out of sync, jump cuts, and a smattering of primitive animation. The overall effect is one of surreal disorientation.

S*Glass is a founder of Bren’t Lewiis Ensemble (a large non-musical music group begun in the early 1980s), and Glands of External Secretion (a duo with rock musician Barbara Manning since the early ’90s). From the late ’80s until 2004, he was the main driver behind Bananafish. Since 2017, he’s performed as a solo artist and completed U.S. tours of the West Coast, New England, part of the South and Midwest, England and Scotland, a handful of places in Canada. In late 2023, he tours Australia and New Zealand. Cesspool of the Angels LP, released by Minimum Table Stacks (NYC), and Thinking of You, Naked CDR, released by l’Esprit de l’Escalier (SF) will be available in October 2023.
