Event description

The time has come! These school holidays, Royal Robotics is teaming up with Gear Up Robotics to take an elite class of students to compete in RoboRAVE on July 17th! This program will consist of four workshops where you will learn about the competition, brainstorm a design for a robot in teams of 3-4 students, build and program your robot and compete on the competition day! Under the direction of Oscar from Royal Robotics and Ioana from Gear up, you will learn tricks of the trade to boost your chances of success! From SumoBot to A-MAZE-ing, and Line Follow to Entrepreneurial, we will guide you through what it takes to create a robot built to win! Whether this is your first time doing robotics or you have competed in the competition before, you are bound to learn and experience something new! Does this sound like something for you? Get involved today!

Workshop Times:

The majority of this course will be held over four sessions during the winter school holidays. Each session will provide opportunities for students to build and create their robots in teams. These sessions are all located at the Peregian Digital Hub

Thursday: 30/06/2022 - 9:00am-12:00pm

Friday: 01/07/2022 - 9:00am-12:00pm

Thursday: 07/07/2022 - 9:00am-12:00pm

Friday: 08/07/2022 - 9:00am-12:00pm

An additional preparation will also be held before RoboRAVE to allow students to understand how the competition day will operate, hand out team shirts, and pack away the robots. This session will also be located at the Peregian Digital Hub:

Friday: 15/07/22 - 4:00pm-6:00pm

FInally is the RoboRAVE competition, where students will have the opportunity to compete against hundreds of other students! This is an all-day event located at the USC Stadium. We do not run or organise the competition, however, Oscar and Ioana will both be present during the entire competition day along with many other adult volunteers with Blue Cards to help and support the students:

Sunday: 17/07/22 - All Day (Specific arrival times will be set during the preparation session on the 15/07/22)

What's included:

The course fee includes:

  • A team t-shirt.
  • Your student's contribution to their team's registration.
  • Four sessions led by two robotics competition legends, an additional preparation session and supervision on the competition day.
  • All gear (robots, building materials, activity resources) for use during the program + competition.

Students/Parents must supply:

  • Snacks/lunch and water bottles for the sessions and competition.
  • Their own laptop or device to program/research with (if your student does not have a device, it is likely others in their team do so arrangements can be made).
  • Travel to and from the sessions/competition.

During the main sessions:

Students will form teams of 3-4 students with other students in the course and decide on a competition to enter. They will then have the opportunity, with guidance from Oscar and Ioana, to build and program their own robot to enter the competition.

During the four holiday sessions, we request that each student brings their own laptop to be used for programming. We ask this as it gives students the opportunity to take their work home to build on it, learn more other skills, and come into the next session one step ahead.

Each student should bring a packed lunch/snack and a water bottle to each session.

Pre-Knowledge Requirements:

This course is designed to be very welcoming to all ability levels, ranging from young students who have never done robotics before to students who have entered RoboRAVE before! Students new to robotics will receive additional help from Oscar and Ioana, as well as help from their other team members, ensuring they have the best time and learn something too! Students who may feel under-challenged and excel at robotics may find themselves pushing through harder and harder challenges throughout the course with plenty of wise tips and tricks from Oscar and Ioana. If you have any inquiries about your student's suitability for the course, please contact Oscar for more information.
