Running on Empty is an immersive art exhibition exploring burnout, identity, pressure, and the quiet strength it takes to keep going.

Held at Dudley House in Bendigo, the exhibition looks beyond individual exhaustion to the invisible social structures that shape it. The works invite us to witness the historical expectations particularly those placed on women that still linger in subtle, unspoken ways. Inherited standards of productivity, care, perfection and self-sacrifice often go unquestioned, quietly fueling burnout.

The first part of the exhibition holds space for this recognition, asking us to sit with what has been normalised.

The second part shifts. Instead of remaining passive within these structures, it explores what it means to grow inside them to reclaim creativity, agency and play as acts of resistance. Here, expression becomes empowerment. Colour becomes defiance. We are invited not simply to survive expectation, but to reshape it.

Across two weeks, visitors are invited to move through contrasting spaces of weight and lightness, exhaustion and freedom. Each room forms part of an emotional journey, personal, reflective, and quietly powerful.

Whether you’re an art lover, a creative spirit, or someone who feels stretched too thin, you’ll find something here that resonates.
