When we think of rural road safety, we often think of passenger vehicle occupants only. But other people use rural roads too. In this webinar, we will start to explore what it means to have safe access for all, with three presentations about three different road user modes.

Motorcyclists are vastly over-represented in road fatalities, with the majority of these occurring outside of major cities. Dr Tana Tan from Safe System Solutions, an experienced motorcycle road safety practitioner and rider of 15 years, will highlight the practical ways to lift motorcycle safety in regional and rural areas through the four Safe System pillars.
Cyclists also encounter elevated risks on rural roads, and some improvements we make for other roads users may be detrimental to their safety. Dr Glen Koorey from ViaStrada, a highly experienced road safety engineer who has held senior positions in both industry and academia, will discuss how audio-tactile line-markings (ATLMs) have been used to improve safety on rural highways in NZ, and how he assisted in identifying appropriate cycle-friendly locations for them and refining the national guidelines for installing ATLMs to take into account cycling needs.
On the other end of the mass spectrum, heavy vehicles represent a potential danger for their operators and other road users alike. Dr Sam Doecke from Adelaide University's Centre for Automotive Safety Research, who headed the Centre's no-blame in-depth crash investigation programme for more than ten years, will discuss rural road safety issue for trucks that have been observed in the more than 100 truck crash investigations that the Centre has undertaken since 2014
