Event description

Curated for Magnet’s iconic Spatial Studio, S P A T I A L I V E features monthly performances by some of Naarm / Melbourne’s most exciting artists. The series aims to create a unique listening environment, with an emphasis on song and improvisational based music, embracing the intimacy of the Spatial. This month’s event features sets from Ailsa Mitchell and Anderson/Kim/Carbonara.

A promising upcoming voice in the folk scene, Ailsa Mitchell creates music from a place of curiosity, and draws influence from Celtic and contemporary folk sounds, the diverse music scene that surrounds her and the music of the natural world. This playful approach results in a sound that is at once familiar and sweetly unique. Her music pairs well with scenic road trips, a place by the fire on a frosty day and a cold winter swim.

Kyrie Anderson (MEL), Chloe Kim 김예지 (SYD), and Sofia Carbonara (MEL) are a new powerhouse percussion trio. Anderson is one of Australia’s most sought-after drummers on the stage and in the studio. She has performed as a side person with some of the best national and international artists from Pussy Riot to Emma Donovan; regularly performs with the Maes, Sam Anning, and many more; and co-leads her own ensembles Aura, The Boys Club and ThenNowWhen. Kim is one of Australia’s foremost improvising musicians; in addition to performing aside legendary musicians across Australia, her strength as an artist emanates as a solo drummer. Most recently she performed 100 hours of solo drumming over 10 days at the MONA FOMA festival in Hobart. Kim’s third solo drums album, “I Love and Embrace,” was released on UK Label Phantom Limb in 2022. Carbonara is an American percussionist who performs with mixed-chamber ensemble Virago, designs collaborative, interdisciplinary works with artists in their community, and writes and performs their own intermedia works. Their debut EP for solo vibraphone, “On Names,” will be released on Alien Passengers in July 2023.
