Curated for Magnet’s iconic Spatial Studio, S P A T I A L I V E features monthly performances by some of Naarm / Melbourne’s most exciting artists. The series aims to create a unique listening environment, with an emphasis on song and improvisational based music, embracing the intimacy of the Spatial. 

S P A T I A L I V E + is a new addition to S P A T I A L I V E, happening quarterly in 2023. In addition to the regular programming of two live sets, the performing artist will also host a free workshop earlier on the same day. This month’s artist is Laurence Pike, who will be giving a workshop, as well as performing solo and duo with Nico Niquo.

Laurence Pike will be giving a 2 hour workshop where he will be sharing the many aspects of his musical approach. This will be given in an open discussion format where attendees are free to ask questions on drums, improvisation, electronics, composition and more. Laurence will also be setup with his drums and electronics, ready to demonstrate anything particular people are curious about. Please ensure to RSVP and be prepared to dive deep into a wide range of topics.

Laurence Pike is a prolific drummer/composer/producer, and one Australia’s most respected and in-demand musicians. Pike has been operating at the cutting edge of the electronic, rock and jazz music worlds for over 20 years, notably as a member of Warp Records alumni PVT, electronic jazz trio Triosk, and more recently with the UK’s Szun Waves, and legendary US/Aus avant-punk group Liars.

2020 saw the release of ‘Prophecy’, his third solo album in as many years for the UK’s The Leaf Label. He has produced two acclaimed duo albums with legendary jazz pianist Mike Nock, is a long-standing band member of Jack Ladder & The Dreamlanders, as well as working with Sarah Blasko, D.D Dumbo, Daniel Johns, Bill Callahan and many more. He has appeared on over 45 album releases, and performed in 36 countries across the globe. Laurence is the curator of the Strata Festival at Phoenix Central Park, Sydney, and was a music fellow of the Australia Council For The Arts in 2020/21.

Nico Niquo (Nico Callaghan) is an Australian musician with releases on Orange Milk Records (US) and Daisart (AU). He has performed in Japan and North America, and contributes to Picnic (US/AU). His new album on Orange Milk Records, Esperanto (2023), follows Timeless (2018) and In A Silent Way (2017).

The Spatialive+ workshop series is generously supported by the Alan C Rose Memorial Trust Scholarship. 
Alan Rose was passionate about community, music, education, and the Victorian College of the Arts. He worked tirelessly to bring music to the widest possible circle, enriching many lives and bringing that joyous spark music engenders. After his untimely death, in 1976, the company he founded (Rose Music), friends, and family, funded this scholarship to honour his memory.
