Sabbath Queen | Australian Premiere
Event description
Emanuel Synagogue and New Israel Fund (NIF) invite you to the Australian premiere of Sabbath Queen at the Jewish International Film Festival. Join us at the Ritz Cinema in Randwick on Thursday, 28 November, at 6.15 pm to experience this uplifting documentary surrounded by members of the Emanuel and NIF community.
About the Film
Filmed over 21 years, Sabbath Queen offers a deep, intimate look at Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie’s journey as a queer father and spiritual leader, reshaping his role as the 38th-generation descendant of Orthodox rabbis. Balancing heritage and self-discovery, Amichai evolves into a “drag-queen rebel” and the founder of Lab/Shul, a radically inclusive, artist-driven congregation. The film explores interfaith love, defiance against patriarchy, and the reinvention of ritual, asking how Jewish identity adapts in a fast-changing world.
