MEETsit and yar A Meeting: Traditional Ways, Contemporary People, on Sacred Land. In a Time of Need

“Country is waving, yelling, ‘You see me?’
I’m coming there with my family.”

We invite all who are drawn to listen to and speak to Djinang man Don Weluk, and his family, of the Marrangu people from Arnhem Land at the Glasshouse Mountains, in Southeast Queensland. Don Weluk paints, sings, and tells the stories of his ancestors, he knows ‘madayin’, sacred lore of his country. Also meet our friend Jenny Timms, Walpiri desert woman, painter, advocate for her people, member of the Lajamanu Aboriginal Association. Don brings his family to Crookneck Retreat, nestled at the foot of Coonowrin because he hears that sacred country is threatened by a quarry. He comes in friendship and understanding. Jenny brings the strength and wisdom of her Walpiri culture to support and encourage peace.

Since birthing this event, we now have a delegation of 12, including Don Weluk and his family. This includes, elders, singers, dancers, musicians, artists and storytellers.

This will be a historical event of a coming together of local First Nation people to share together with us the opportunity to sit in circle with these people, here on our doorstep.

Please Note: This event will commence at 10am and the formalities will end at 5pm but welcome to stay for an informal sit and yarn around the fire until 8pm

o Arnhem people speak of old ways and culture, and its difficult position finding a place in today’s modern life, the challenges of keeping country sacred. Ask your questions. Share your ideas.

o Dance (bunggul) with the women, Doreen Smith, Agnes Rankin, Marsha Rankin, and Nita Julurradi.

o A limited range of paintings available and keepsakes as momentos of the occasion.

We see the family of majestic Glasshouse peaks, calling the Human family to come together in true kinship. We are deeply grateful to our Arnhem family for answering the call of our sacred country. Come, bring your children, they are free (under 16), bring your whole family and move toward a positive future with love and meaning.

Proceeds from this event will contribute to bringing the 12 delegation group 3000+ kms from Arhnem Land to our backyard and also the preservation of these mountains, ensuring their safeguard for generations to come.
