November brings us to Reed, growing quietly at the water's edge.

By now, the landscape has changed. Leaves have fallen from many of the trees, evenings arrive earlier, and the fullness of the growing season has given way to something sparer. After Samhain, there is often a sense that the year has exhaled.

Reed feels at home here.

It grows in places that are neither entirely land nor entirely water, rooted in the mud while moving constantly with wind and current. For centuries, reeds have been gathered and transformed into whistles, pipes, flutes, writing implements, baskets, thatching, and other useful objects. Perhaps most evocatively, a simple reed can become an instrument: breath enters, and something previously silent is given a voice.

This month, we will explore what Reed can teach us about our own voices. Not simply about speaking our minds, but about listening carefully enough to know what is worth saying. About recognizing the difference between the noise around us and the quieter truths beneath it. About remaining rooted in ourselves while still allowing life to change us.

During our live gathering, we'll explore the folklore, symbolism, and traditions surrounding Reed, including its relationship with water, music, breath, communication, boundaries, and the liminal landscape of the Samhain season.

Together, we'll explore reflective practices around voice and discernment, considering what has become clearer as the year has unfolded and what we may finally be ready to name.

We'll also spend time with Reed's remarkable ability to bend without breaking. There is wisdom in a plant that does not attempt to defeat the wind. It moves with what comes, then finds its way upright again.

For those who prefer to move at their own pace, a Virtual Pass is available. Virtual participants receive the class recording along with all accompanying materials and can engage with the video recording for a two-week period following our gathering. After that, access to the video recording will gently close.

Whether you join us live or through the Virtual Pass, Reed offers us a quieter way of thinking about communication: before the voice comes breath; before the words come listening; and beneath the moving water, something remains rooted.

During this live class, we will explore:

Reed Lore, Symbolism & Sacred Wisdom

Together we will journey into the folklore and symbolism of Reed, traditionally known as Ngetal in the Celtic tree calendar. Growing at the meeting place of land and water, Reed belongs to the edges—rooted below the surface, bending with wind and current, yet rising upright from the marsh.

Long associated with music, breath, communication, protection, and the ability to move between worlds, Reed invites us to consider not simply whether we speak, but what moves through us when we do. In this season of deepening darkness, we will explore Reed as a teacher of discernment: when to speak, when to listen, and how to recognize the truths that have become clear enough to be given a voice.

Voice, Listening & the Truth Beneath the Noise

Reed instruments create sound because they are hollow enough for breath to pass through them. We will use this beautiful image to explore our own relationship with voice and listening.

What becomes possible when we quiet some of the noise surrounding us? What have we been trying to explain when perhaps we first need to listen? And what truth has been quietly forming beneath the surface of our lives?

Through guided reflection, we will explore authentic expression not as speaking more loudly, but as learning to recognize what is truly ours to say.

Bending Without Losing Our Roots

Reeds survive wind and moving water through flexibility rather than resistance. They bend, sway, and respond to what surrounds them while remaining rooted beneath the water.

As the year moves into its darker season, we will explore this as a practice for our own lives: how we might meet change without becoming untethered from ourselves. Reed asks us to consider the difference between adapting and abandoning ourselves, between flexibility and simply being carried wherever the current takes us.
