Saddleback Mountain Walkshop 2026

Curious about the rich diversity of plants surrounding the iconic lookouts at Saddleback Mountain? Join us for a guided Walkshop exploring this unique and accessible pocket of Illawarra rainforest.

The 3.92-hectare reserve provides an excellent example of the subtropical rainforest communities spread across the region. It includes remnants of the Illawarra Subtropical Rainforest, now an Endangered  Ecological Community, as well as threatened species such as Zieria granulata.

The open, parkland setting makes it easy to observe and discuss individual plants up close—perfect for both keen plant people and those just starting to learn.

The Walkshop will be led by local rainforest specialist Carl Glaister, who developed the rainforest garden at Wollongong Botanic Garden. There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions and share knowledge along the way.

We’ll meet at the Northern Lookout and take a short walk around the reserve. Most of the route follows formed paths, though there are some stairs and sections of uneven, rocky or grassy ground. Please wear suitable clothing and footwear, bring sun protection and water.

We’ll finish with a relaxed morning tea. Families and children are very welcome.
