This year, the Safe Steps Candlelight Vigil will take place on Wednesday 6 May 2026.
Every year on National Family Violence Remembrance Day, Safe Steps brings the community, sector leaders and key stakeholders together to honour and remember loved ones and provide a space to share stories of resilience, ignite hope and motivate change.
Led by courageous survivors and passionate advocates, the Safe Steps Candlelight Vigil unites Victoria in a powerful tribute and empowers anyone experiencing violence to reach out for support when they can, helping to interrupt intergenerational trauma and prevent further loss of life.

This event will be discussing and contain stories of family and domestic abuse.
Photo identification is required to access Parliament House.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should be aware that this event may contain images, voices or names of deceased persons.
Counsellors will be available onsite for support.

- Will the Candlelight Vigil be livestreamed?
No, the Candlelight Vigil will not be livestreamed due to onsite power and technical limitations.
- Will there be counsellors at the Candlelight Vigil?
Yes, counselling support will be available at our Safe Steps Candlelight Vigil on 6 May.
- Will there be media or photographers?
A photographer will be onsite and attendees may be photographed.
As this event is to honour lives lost and raise awareness of family and domestic violence, we expect there will be media present. We are unable to guarantee that attendees would not be filmed or photographed on the evening.
- Is the Candlelight Vigil accessible?
Yes. The venue is accessible, with accessible matting and reserved seating for people with disability. An Auslan interpreter will be present throughout the event. Please email comms@safesteps.org.au if you have any specific accessibility requirements.
- What should I wear?
The Candlelight Vigil is held outdoors in May, so attendees are encouraged to wear warm clothing and bring an umbrella if rain is forecast. The event will be on grass so sturdy, enclosed footwear is recommended.
- Can I bring my pet?
Guide dogs, seeing eye dogs and assistance dogs are welcome, however, we would kindly ask that pets are not brought to the Candlelight Vigil to ensure everyone's comfort and safety.
- Can I bring my children?
While children may attend, please note that the vigil is a reflective and sensitive event, as it honours lives lost to family and domestic violence and stories of domestic abuse will be shared
