Safer Cities, Her Way - Evening Walkshop

Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre
Bathurst NSW, Australia

Add to calendar

Description

You are invited to join a walking workshop or “walkshop” in Bathurst’s CBD area to help Council improve perceptions of safety and accessibility for women, girls and gender-diverse people as part of the Safer Cities: Her Way project.

The walkshops are designed to better understand people’s experience of moving through the CBD area. Community members will move through a route as a group while making observations and noting their perceptions of safety and how easy it is to travel along the route. Your feedback will be used to identify potential improvements to the CBD.

*Please RSVP by 16 October.

About the workshop

Each Walkshop will run for approximately 1.5 hours. As we walk through routes in the CBD, you will be asked a series of questions about where you feel safe or unsafe, what you see, hear and how this might impact your journey through the CBD.

If you would like to participate and have specific accessibility needs, please let us know through the registration process.

The walkshops will be run by The Social Deck on behalf of Bathurst Regional Council.

You will be offered a $50 voucher for participating in this workshop.

Project background

Everyone deserves to feel safe when using public spaces. Research shows that women, girls and gender-diverse people often experience cities differently, and are more likely to change where, when or how they travel because of safety concerns. Factors such as lighting, visibility, isolation, and access to help affect whether people feel comfortable in public places.

By understanding these experiences, Council will prioritise improvements that make Bathurst's public spaces feel safer, and more welcoming and inclusive.

Through this project, we will undertake co-design with community members, community groups and stakeholders to help inform potential work and upgrades to Bathurst CBD. This will focus on the area within approximately 800 metres of the Howick Street Bus Interchange, focusing on footpaths, parks and bus stops across the surrounding CBD precinct.
