Salon 78: Challenges to our Freedom around the World
Event description
The first Mardi Gras on 24 June 1978 was part of an International Day of Solidarity, requested by activists in San Francisco, who were campaigning against the exclusion of all supporters of gay rights from the California school system. With the re-election of Trump, LGBTIQ people and democratic rights in USA are again under threat.
In Australia and around the world our movement made considerable gains in human rights in the decades following, but now in country after country human rights, democratic space, and queer freedoms are being rolled back. How do we fight for our liberation in a world of increasingly impacted by climate and economic crisis, sexism, racism, war and dictatorships?
First Mardi Gras will host a panel of speakers on how we can respond to intensified backsliding and repression in key countries and regions of the world. It will be chaired by Ken Davis and will feature speakers from Latin America, South Asia, Oceania, the Arab world and Turkiye.
This FREE event will take place at 4pm on Tuesday 24 June at Qtopia.
