Discover the art of portrait painting in this hands-on workshop with local artist Carmel Robertson, inspired by the Archibald Prize 2026 at SAM.

Whether you’re new to portraiture or looking to develop your painting skills, this workshop will guide you through the foundations of creating a realistic portrait using traditional oil painting techniques, from identifying light and shadow through to mixing accurate colours for your palette.

No previous painting experience is required.

All painting materials and equipment will be supplied by SAM. Participants will simply need to bring an A4 colour close-up photograph of someone they are familiar with.
