Sam's Corner: Boogie, Blues, and Jazz
Description
Sam Rudin is, of course, the owner/creator of the Back Room. He is also a top-notch pianist whose versatility encompasses the whole range of 20th century music. He can evoke the spirit of Fats Waller, Oscar Peterson, Mose Allison, and Jerry Lee Lewis - sometimes all at the same time.
While Sam's repertoire includes some unexpected delights (bluegrass piano?), it revolves mainly around the well-known intersection of blues and jazz. And once in a while, he reveals that he can also be a compelling vocalist whose rough-hewn voice conveys both drama and humor.
In case you didn't know, when Sam first established himself in Northern CA 40 years ago, he was best known as a rip-roaring solo pianist (and vocalist too), playing special events and blues/jazz festivals throughout the state. Embracing a moniker bequeathed by his friends, he performed as "Hurricane Sam." He eventually formed Hurricane Sam & the Hotshots, but he never lost his identity as a virtuoso and multi-faceted soloist.
