BASKET OF HAMMERS PRESENTS SAMHAIN 2026

Now in its sixth year on the Sunshine Coast, Samhain returns to The Old Ambulance Station for a celebration of experimental music, sound and visual art.

Presented by Basket Of Hammers, Samhain brings together artists from across Australia and internationally for a program spanning live performance, sound, installation and visual art throughout the spaces of The Old Ambulance Station.

This year begins with the official opening of the Samhain gallery exhibition on Thursday 29 October, followed by the main live music program on Saturday 31 October.

The Samhain exhibition continues through to Saturday 7 November.

ALAN PHELAN

Dublin-based artist Alan Phelan works across sculpture, photography, film, public art and installation. His work is currently featured in In Minor Keys, the 61st Venice Biennale, and has been exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Irish Museum of Modern Art, The Hugh Lane and institutions throughout Europe and internationally.

His practice draws together personal, queer, technological and political histories, often reworking overlooked cultural fragments through images, objects, materials and display.

RÓNÁN McCALL

Rónán McCall is a Dublin based Irish photographer whose practice spans long-term documentary, somatic image-making and large format vernacular studies. Working entirely on analogue processes, he hand-prints all work in his own darkroom. His projects excavate the buried wounds of Irish institutional history, the disappearing culture of the western islands, and the intergenerational transmission of trauma through the body. His work reaches beneath the political into the mythic and pre-Christian substrata of Irish consciousness that colonisation obscured but never extinguished. His debut monograph will be published in 2027 by Stanley Barker, London.

JEREMY PLINT

Jeremy Plint is a visual artist based between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. Working across painting, installation and textiles, their material and process-driven practice examines constructs around death, belonging and family through a Queer lens. Recent projects include the solo installation Monolith at Metro Arts (2024) and an artist residency at Queensland Children’s Hospital (2025).

TRALALA BLIP

Tralala Blip are an unconventionally abled electronic pop band based in the Northern Rivers, Bundjalung region of NSW. Relentlessly convening every week for nearly two decades, creating sound worlds through collaboration with their beloved machines, has led to invitations to perform at Unsound Krakow, Soft Centre Sydney, Dark Mofo Tasmania, ZKM Karlsruhe, Open Frame Brisbane, Illuminate Adelaide, TEDTalks at Sydney Opera House and most recently ART|JOG Yogyakarta. They are currently sculpting a new album for Someone Good / Room40 Records for release in 2027.

PRIMITIVE MOTION

Primitive Motion is the longstanding Meanjin dream-float duo of Sandra Selig and Leighton Craig. They inhabit the borderlands of long form exploration, improvisation, echo saturated pop and fuzzy motorik groove. Expect all or none.

PEYO

Multi-instrumentalist Peyo Pappadopoulos explores the piano as a space for improvisation and composition, moving between repetitive, abrasive structures and minimal, ambient sound. Influenced by Alice Coltrane, Julius Eastman and Milford Graves, his solo work follows the flowing energy and momentum of the music.

AT/DC

Andrew Tuttle + Darren Cross

Australian composers and improvisers Andrew Tuttle and Darren Cross present AT/DC, following the release of their debut duo album on Room40’s Someone Good imprint in October 2026. Banjo and acoustic guitar meet digital synthesis, processed electronics and manipulated field recordings in music that is as melodic as it is adventurous.

UNREGISTERED MASTER BUILDER

Unregistered Master Builder is the project of Portland-born, Brisbane-based artist Joseph E Burgess. Working across textiles, sound, kinetic art and custom instrument building, his practice explores the political and technological dimensions embedded in processes of making. In 2025, his performance work received the Best Music award at the New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME) conference.

MUTTER

Sufi mystic H-I-K says: “A person does not hear sound only through the ears; he hears sound through every pore of his body. It permeates the entire being.”

As new eyes and hands emerge of sacred sound vibration you too renew all through. Now, hear Mutter unveil [in a beam of light] his cosmic children.
