Dr. Catherine Hughes is a Principal Research Scientist at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation. She has more than 30 years experience in hydrology and the measurement and application of naturally occurring and artificial radioactive and stable isotopes to trace the transport of water, contaminants and particulates in groundwater, reservoirs, catchments and coastal water bodies. She is interested in developing methods and creating foundational datasets for using stable and radioactive water isotopes as tracers of past and present weather and climate, hydrological processes such as recharge, evaporation and mixing in surface water and groundwater, contaminant and radionuclide transport in water, and for food traceability, isotope forensics, biosecurity, and ecology. She is also a passionate advocate for women and LGBTQI people in STEM.

Nikki Keighran's journey into radiation protection is as unique as her background. She graduated with first-class honours in a Bachelor of Forensic Science in Applied Chemistry from the University of Technology Sydney, launching a rewarding career in STEM. Now at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, Nikki enhances nuclear security, coordinates nuclear forensic investigations, and provides expertise on radiation safety. Before joining ANSTO, Nikki served as a crime scene investigator with the Australian Federal Police, handling high-profile cases related to illicit drugs and counter terrorism. Her frontline experience fuels her strong commitment to enhancing safety and preparedness for first responders.
