Tuesday Night Update

Tragically, we lost one tree today, but we are still fighting!

We need people on-site to stand under remaining ficus in lane way. Be there by 7am if you can.

We are asking the Worksafe Commissioner to investigate unsafe work practices in an effort to stop the work. We are also framing questions to be asked in Parliament, as there was a lot said by Anthony Kannis (DG DPLH) that was confusing and conflicting with accounts by Vincent Mayor.

5 or 6 move on notices were handed out today but no arrests. We are keeping a firm and calm presence under difficult and emotional circumstances and we thank you all for your support and acknowledgement.

Update

We had a fantastic turn out this morning, thank you all local and wider community for being here! The tree loppers didn't show up, but it's not over yet.

We had great media coverage; watch all stations! They were all there - thank you 10, 7, 9 and ABC. And a special thankyou to the people in the trees who are there for the duration, holding our collective hopes for the trees to remain standing tall.

Our key message to government, media and all concerned is:

We want houses and we want trees; good design and good living is inclusive of nature;
We want a stay of the destruction of the trees, allowing time for a more considered and transparent process;
We want the State to work with the Town of Vincent to review reports and options and to ensure community involvement in future planning.

Our battle cry is : 'HOUSES AND TREES FOR PEOPLE, BIRDS AND BEES!'

Join local residents for BYO breakfast for a gentle blockade of the tree lopping company contracted to cut down 10 healthy and beloved trees at the corner of Guildford Rd and East Parade. Some of these trees are more than 100 years old, many with magnificent canopies.

Our community is not against housing development. We believe good development embraces the benefits of established trees, and we want our new neighbours to enjoy living with shade and beauty, and wonderful mulberries each spring! And for all of us to have an improved road system.

Only a few local residents were notified just 3 working days prior to the scheduled tree removal on Monday 14 October.

On October 12 more than 85 residents gathered at the site to share their concerns with the Vincent Mayor, Alison Xamon. The Mayor emphasised that this is a state government / developer project which is proceeding rapidly with no consultation and no transparency. Requests for site and arborists reports have been ignored, including one that states the trees must go in order to remove asbestos from the site. An engineer present at the gathering stated that there are effective asbestos removal processes that need not require the removal of trees.

Please share this information widely and reach out to anyone of influence to draw attention to the issue and to holt the removal of our beloved trees.
