Description
Empower yourself to turn data into insight with confidence. In this dynamic workshop, participants will learn how to use SAVI effectively - building the skills needed not only to navigate the platform with ease, but also to support others with basic technical guidance and data questions. You’ll gain practical experience designing measurable questions, avoiding common data pitfalls, uncovering and applying qualitative insights, and creating clear, compelling charts. Through a high-impact mix of hands-on practice and live demonstrations, this workshop equips you with the tools, confidence, and data literacy that can help you to make smarter, data-informed decisions.
Who Should Attend?
Ideal participants are those that are looking to have a more in-depth understanding of SAVI mechanics, basics of data literacy, pitfalls, sensemaking, storytelling and informed decision making.

We will ask that you bring your own laptop to the training, this will be required. If this is an issue, please reach out to the Grow Team for assistance.

Presenter
Kevin Mickey, GISP
Kevin serves as the Director of Geoinformatics at The Polis Center, where he facilitates strategic engagement efforts across government agencies, universities, nonprofit organizations, and the private sector. His work focuses on cultivating new partnerships and strengthening existing collaborations to expand project opportunities. In addition to his leadership role, Kevin oversees the management of multiple GIS initiatives, particularly in the areas of crisis management and community resilience. As an adjunct faculty member at the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering, Kevin teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses on social science data and methodologies for modeling the impacts of crises. Kevin is a Past President of the Geospatial Professional Network (GPN), formerly known as the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA). He currently serves as Co-Chair of the GPN Community Resilience Workgroup and has previously chaired several other committees within the organization. Kevin is a recipient of multiple URISA honors, including the URISA Leadership Award. In addition to his work with GPN, Kevin is a Past Chair of the Multihazard Mitigation Council (MMC) under the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS). He has also contributed to geospatial initiatives at the state level, having served on the Board of Directors for the Indiana Geographic Information Council. Currently, he is a member of the National Visiting Committee for the National GeoTech Center of Excellence. Kevin holds a Bachelor of Arts in Geography and a Master of Planning from Indiana University. His professional credentials include Certified GIS Professional (GISP), CompTIA CTT+ Certified Classroom Trainer, and Esri Certified Desktop Associate.
