SAWA Australia (SA) Movie Night at the Mercury

Saturday 20 July at 7pm:  Film Night at the Mercury Cinema, Morphett St, Adelaide

SAWA is partnering with GIFFA (Ghan International Film Festival Australia) for this event.   GIFFA has obtained the film “Laughing in Afghanistan”, a feature-length film which tells the story of Karim Asir, the Afghan Charlie Chaplin who uses laughter as his only weapon in the fight against adversities.   When the Taliban took over Afghanistan, Karim was threatened with death.  He managed to escape to Greece.   The film follows his life adventure and explores the issue of laughter in Afghanistan, and beyond.  

We will also be showing the short film “Yellow” which has been nominated for an Oscar. The film sheds light on the plight of Afghan women following the Taliban's takeover.  Yellow tells the story of Laili as she enters a shop to buy her first full body veil - the infamous Chadari or Burqa which is synonymous with the Taliban in Afghanistan. She's buying it at a time when the Taliban have come into power, and the future of women is unknown, and this is what the film hopes to deal with.

The Mercury will be providing their usual refreshments which will be available to buy at the bar.

Raffle tickets will be on sale in the foyer and you will have the chance to win some fabulous prizes.

All proceeds will go the Vocational Training Centre for Women and Girls in Kabul.
