A recital by two young saxophonists united by a shared interest in improvisation and experimental practice on their instruments. Each artist will perform an ambitious solo work, and improvise together.

Saccades by Ted Moore is an electro-acoustic solo work using feedback processes and neural networks to emulate the process of saccadic masking in human vision. Saturated, layered and stimulating, it includes striking interplay between acoustic and electronic sound, and elaborate, contemporary processes for generating electro-acoustic sound textures.

A manorina nest at the edge by Josten Myburgh is an extended electro-acoustic solo that takes the poetics of ecotones and edge effects in ecosystems as a departure point for intricate workings with field recordings, live electronics and acoustic alto saxophone. Undulating, gentle and unusual, it is the next in a series of works by the composer which strive to understand emerging relationships between place, self and music. The piece was recently performed at MONO (Room40, Brisbane) and Wakushoppu (Punctum, Prague); this is it’s Western Australian premiere.

Josten Myburgh is a composer, organiser & experimental saxophonist based on Whadjuk Noongar boodja in Boorloo. He has performed and recorded with distinguished artists in experimental music internationally including Burkhard Beins, Michael Pisaro-Liu, Emilio Gordoa, Sabine Vögel, Adam Pultz-Melbye, Jim Denley, Aviva Endean & Annette Krebs. Locally he maintains duo projects with Eduardo Cossio, Sage Pbbbt, Daisy Sanders and Jameson Feakes, leads ensemble Ghost Gum Reverb, and works with interdisciplinary artists Joshua Pether and Elizabeth Pedler. Performances include Vestafor Festival (Norway), Offene Ohren (Munich), FILEC Festival (Cuernavaca), VOLTA (CDMX), the Perth International Jazz Festival, Fremantle Biennale, Supersense Festival of the Ecstatic (Melbourne), Festival Cable#8 (Nantes), Sacred Realism (Berlin), the NOW now (Sydney) and Inland Concert Series (Melbourne & Perth). He is co-director of Tone List (2016-), the Audible Edge Festival of Sound (2017-), and the Walyalup Weekend of Improvised Music (2023-). He has curated programs for the Unhallowed Arts Festival, Totally Huge New Music Festival, Mandurah Arts Festival, State Library of WA, WA Museum Boola Bardip, and Liquid Architecture.

As a saxophonist based in Boorloo (Perth), Naoko Uemoto’s practice blends her classical training with improvisational curiosity. Her appetite for experimentation has led to numerous commissions by local artists and composers. In these collaborations, she has had the opportunity to bring a range of playful ideas to the concert stage, including the use of classical saxophone techniques to rock out to dubstep, and going on a sonic swim among animations of Frankenstein-esque, anthropomorphic fish. Naoko finds great joy in being surrounded by such imaginative people, but above all, she is inspired by the strong force of female saxophonists in Boorloo.

Accessibility information: The Swanbourne Church of the Resurrection is wheelchair accessible with an accessible bathroom. There are parking bays available close to the doors of the venue. The venue is a 500m, 7-minute walk from the train station through well-maintained suburbs.
