To kick us off, Tania Uren, a patent attorney and principal at Davies Collison Cave, will be presenting on what synthetic biologists need to know about patents and intellectual property.

Genes, pathways, microorganisms, plants, processes, algorithms,… What can and can’t you patent and when should you?
How much, and what kind of, data do you need for your patent? How many experiments do you really need to do?
What can you do with your IP, and how can you add value to it?
How do you deal with other people’s IP when you’re doing your own research? Does anyone really read those MTAs, and what about CRISPR/Cas9?

Speaker: Tania Uren

Tania Uren is a patent attorney and principal at Davies Collison Cave, a leading intellectual property firm with offices across the Asia-Pacific region. Tania started out as a scientist, doing a PhD at the University of Melbourne and then moving to Washington DC to do a postdoc at the National Institutes of Health and the Food and Drug Administration. After a brief stint as a visiting scientist at the FDA, Tania switched gears and moved into the field of IP, working for leading US law firms before moving back to Australia to join DCC. Tania is passionate about working with innovators to create value and bring their ideas to the market, working closely with her clients to provide commercially-driven advice on patent strategy and IP portfolio management. She has a particular interest in start-ups, and recently took a couple of years out of DCC take up the role of Head of IP at Nourish Ingredients, a food-tech / biotech start-up, giving her a unique insight into the start-up environment.
