Fresh from the Sundance and SXSW film festivals, GONDWANA VR: The Exhibition has brought a touch of movie magic to the South Australian Museum for the January school holidays.

To celebrate, we've invited the gang from GooRoo Animation to help younger visitors aged 5 - 16 make your own eye-popping animated film. You'll design and sculpt your own plasticine characters and creatures, then bring them to life using the Stop Motion Studio app.

We'll screen everyone's finished videos at the end of the workshop, before they're uploaded to the GooRoo YouTube channel for you to share with your friends and family.

This is a two-hour workshop for kids aged 5-16.

Important information and FAQs:

Where is the workshop?
At the South Australian Museum, North Terrace. Please meet at the signposted meeting point in the Main Foyer and we will guide you to our workshop space.

Do I need to stay with my child?
Yes, you will need to stay for the duration of the workshop. Assistance from accompanying adults is usually not necessary but is welcome if you would like to get involved. Adults do not need to purchase tickets.

Who can participate?
This workshop is for young people aged 5 - 16 years. Please note that children will need to be able operate a touch screen with independence to participate in this workshop, and adults must be prepared to assist younger children. The GooRoo presenters are experienced with working with kids of all ages but will not be able to assist everyone at once.

Does each participant get their own device and make their own film, or do they work in groups?
Participants will usually work together in pairs or groups of 3. If your child comes with siblings or friends, they can work together, or if they come alone, they may be asked to work with another participant. GooRoo has lots of experience facilitating collaboration with new children.

Does this workshop have any assumed skills?
This is a beginners' workshop which will introduce the basic concepts of stop-motion animation and get kids of all abilities making their own short films. Experience in animation or film making is not required, however participants will need to be able to operate a touch screen device with some independence.

What happens in the workshop?
Workshops will consist of an initial presentation and demonstration of approximately 20 mins. There will then be around an hour of creating and animating leading into about 20 minutes of editing. The final 20 minutes of the workshop is for sharing and viewing the films.

What kind of films are made?
Workshop participants will use plasticine to make a short animation on a topic of their choice. They will edit and add music to their animations. These films are usually around 20 seconds long. Participants will create their own story using the plasticine provided, there is lots of creative freedom and many sets and backdrops to choose from.

Do we bring the plasticine home with us?
Participants can bring their plasticine creations home. However, all animation equipment is the property of GooRoo and needs to be left behind to be used in future workshops.

Does this workshop include entry into GONDWANA VR: The Exhibition?
No, for GONDWANA VR: The Exhibition, you will need to book tickets separately via our website. Please book early to secure your preferred time as we anticipate that many sessions will sell out. The rest of the Museum is free to visit.

Access information
The workshop space can be accessed via stairs or lift. Some larger powered wheelchairs or mobility scooters may not easily navigate this heritage-listed building, please contact us at education@samuseum.sa.gov.au if you have questions.

Workshops can get noisy - if your child is sensitive to noise, we have sensory backpacks which include noise-cancelling headphones available for free loan at the security desk in the museum.
