School Holiday Workshops with Artist Jane Gillings

Jane Gillings, sculptor and the artist behind these four school holiday workshops on the 5 and 6 of October.

Jane has exhibited at Sculpture by the Sea in Bondi more than ten times, and turns discarded materials into sculpture, often with humour and word play. Her workshops are built around one idea: have fun, and make something to take home!

Monday 5 October

11am-1pm Big Pencils

Come and make some giant pencils that actually work! Using cardboard, paint, glue and other secret ingredients, children will construct an oversized pencil that definitely won’t fit in their pencil case.

2-4pm Victorian Portraits

We’ve all seen those spooky portraits of people who lived in the 1800’s, when photography demanded you sit really still so that the image didn’t blur. Thats why everyone looked so serious. No one could hold a smile that long. Learn how to recreate those old-world portraits using ink and good old fashioned know-how. Then make a fancy gilt frame so that your portrait can sit on the mantlepiece. Who will you paint?

Tuesday 6 October

11am-1pm Foam Stamps

Create your own font by making a foam stamp alphabet, set of emojis or patterns. Use your stamps to make some greeting cards or even a business card for yourself. This analogue activity will take you back to the days where printing was all done by hand.

2-4pm Shadow Puppets

Back in the day when TV and computers didn’t exist, people used white sheets for screens and made their own version of TV with shadow puppets. In this workshop, you will make your own articulated shadow puppet which means you can make your puppet move parts of its body. When you’ve finished you will have an opportunity to use the shadow puppet screen to perform a shadow puppet play.

$60 per child, ages 9-13, all materials included, and every child takes their project home!
