SCIENCE, ENGINEERING, ART and SAILING! Educational Program and Sail
Event description
Learn about marine science and seamanship and help raise the sails on a traditional sailing ship. You will sail by Angel Island and see the Golden Gate Bridge.
About this event
For ages 8-15. Youth must be accompanied by a chaperone in a ration of no more than 8 youth to 1 adult (troop leader or parent/guardian).
Itinerary:
- 9:30-11:30 Dockside Programming
- 11:30-12:00 Lunch at the Bay Model (Bring a bag lunch!)
- 12:00-2:00 Sailing on San Francisco Bay
Learn about:
- Knots and rope art
- Navigation
- Simple machines
- Ocean observations
- Seamanship: steering the ship, learning to coil lines and explore traditional sailing techniques.
Location
The ships are docked at the US Army Corps of Engineers Bay Model Visitor Center in Sausalito, CA. Access to the ship and parking lot is via Marinship Way.
Free parking is available in the Bay Model Visitor Center Western/back lot. Based on recent trends, parking may be limited in the Bay Model parking lot due to Sea Trek Kayaking and the Bay Model being very busy in the mornings and early afternoons. Spillover parking is available on Bridgeway (non metered all day spots) and on weekends in front of #10 Libertyship Way in the yellow zones.
Check in
Please wait at the gate to the pier in front of the Bay Model. There will be an escort to walk you past the gate, down the pier to the ship.
Restrooms
We recommend using shore facilities at the Bay Model as a priority prior to sailing. Call of the Sea's ships have a public restroom on board, available for use one at a time.
Covid 19 Safety Protocol
- Masks are recommended to access the interior spaces on the ship
What to Bring
- A reusable water bottle to ensure you stay hydrated. Bag lunch.
- Dress in layers: a windbreaker, warm base layer, comfortable pants, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and comfortable closed toe shoes. No high heels are permitted. Clothing may get dirty while sailing.
Weather
We sail in most weather, including cold, wind, fog, and light showers. On occasion, we will need to reschedule a sail due to extreme wind or rain. You will be notified within at least 24 hours of the scheduled sail and we will work with you to reschedule or refund your order.
The Ships
Call of the Sea has 2 ships: a 132’ wooden brigantine, MATTHEW TURNER, and an 82' steel schooner, SEAWARD. Either ship may be used for the sailing part of this program.
Why Call of the Sea?
We're a nonprofit supporting on-the-water environmental education. During the week, we provide educational programs to youth. Community Sails are a great way to share our mission with new people and to help lower costs for youth educational sails.
