Part 1: Starting in STEM Professional Learning Series
90-minutes, delivered by Questacon
Ignite your STEM educational practice with ‘Starting in STEM’ – a dynamic, 90 minute, in-person professional development series, designed specifically for educators beginning their STEM education journey. This interactive experience will equip educators with the confidence and practical tools to foster a learning culture rich in STEM dispositions. Through the lens of a design-thinking process, you’ll explore how to plan and create contextualised, problem-based inquires that spark empathy, critical thinking and the intrinsic motivation to make a real difference in the community. Join us and take the leap towards transformative STEM teaching and learning!
Part 2: Object-Based Learning
90-minutes, delivered by Science Gallery Learning Experiences Team
Spark curiosity using objects in this session that includes a visit to Science Gallery Melbourne’s exhibition, DISTRACTION. Inspired by museum and gallery education practice, this part of the day will unpack strategies and questioning techniques for engaging students in object investigation. By experience the artworks for yourself, the session will uncover how objects in both the gallery and the classroom provide a seamless opportunity for inquiry that hooks students in further learning.
Part 3: Speculative Thinking
75-minutes, delivered by Science Gallery Learning Experiences Team
At future-focused Science Gallery we love to speculate. In the final session, you will use the exhibition to explore student-centred speculative thinking strategies that promote critical and creative thinking. This approach, which transcends disciplines, allows students to imagine preferred futures, possible worlds, and innovative solutions to the problems that matter to them. Drawing on Science Gallery’s approach to working with young people to ideate exhibition themes, the session will showcase ways to amplify student voice through this innovative pedagogical practice.
